Vasilissa and the Deathless Heart A Girl and Her Doll Book 1 eBook Carrie Megginson
Highly original and funny. However modern and full of irony our heroine is though, the fairy tale elements are treated with love, respect and a great deal of insight. A really good read, not exclusively for young adults.Product details

Vasilissa and the Deathless Heart A Girl and Her Doll Book 1 eBook Carrie Megginson Reviews
Kick-ass female protagonist navigating through an interesting fantasy landscape with Russian fairy tale references. She has some Beyond-The-Veil genetic heritage, but she's a modern day young women as well. Story moves along nicely with good twists, and it's interwoven with humor that current teens will like.
My 15 year old daughter and I read this together, and we BOTH enjoyed it. This book doesn't "talk down" to it's readers, and although it's primary audience is teen girls, it's intelligently written, with plenty of references to interest women of any age (Maybe men, too, but I can't speak for them).
I'm not really the demographic for this book. It's a "young adult" novel, and one of those words definitely no longer applies to me. But I gave it a read and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The author moves the story along at a brisk pace; she also has a good ear for dialogue and how teenagers really speak. The contrast between the fantasy world "beyond the veil" and our "mundane" world is interesting, as is the author's deft use of Russian folklore to animate the plot. This tale is essentially a hero's quest as a band of unlikely friends/warriors sets out to meet and overcome a series of tasks before confronting their ultimate challenge. In a sense, it reminds me of some of Baum's later Oz books but with a much sharper edge and darker humor. Fans of fantasy, no matter their age, will find this book engaging. Give it a try. I think you'll like it.
Highly original and funny. However modern and full of irony our heroine is though, the fairy tale elements are treated with love, respect and a great deal of insight. A really good read, not exclusively for young adults.
